Shigei is chosen as one of "Nihon no Sato 100 Selection" sites.

Shigei in which Manda Fermentation Co., Ltd. is located is chosen as one of rural communities of "Nihon no Sato(Japanese rural communities) 100 Selection" from over 2,000 candidate sites.
"Nihon no Sato 100 Selection" is held as part of its 130th and 30th anniversary celeblations by Asahi Shimbun and the Shinrin Bunka(Forestry Culture) incorporated foundation, and supported by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, and the Ministry of the Environment.
According to guidelines for applicants, the following points were accessment criteria;

  1. Scenic attraction
  2. Life's diversity
  3. Human agency
They reported that there were 4,474 applications from all over Japan and they decided 100 sites from over 2,000 candidate sites.

The beautiful view from the summit of the Shirataki Mountain is popular among people, and Isamu Yoshii (Poet and scriptwriter, 1886-1960) had also visited the mountain and composed a poem. You can find his monumental stone on the way mountaineering.
On the summit of the Shirataki Mountain, there are a lot of stone Buddhist images. These sculptured figures were built by Denroku Kashihara(Founder of religion, 1781-1828) and his pupils.
You might have a mysterious impression from those statues on the top of the Shirataki Mountain.

Pyrethrum, insect flowers, were a specialty product of Innoshima Island formerly.
Old men and women have said it is unforgettable that hills and mountains in Innoshima Island turned in white with such insect flowers in the flowering period.
Pyrethrum had gone away from hills and mountains in Innoshima Island as industrial insecticides drove mosquito coils away.
Some volunteers launch a project to reviving Pyrethrum cultivation in recent years.
You can enjoy seeing white flowers of Pyrethrum on some hills and mountains in Innoshima Island from May to July.
